A quick haiku about teaching poetry in 7th grade

Poetry stations

Fills my heart with hot rage

So never again.

  1. hoooo kay! Not what I expected! I was captured by your ‘without getting fired’ line in your intro, then I truly laughed out loud when I read your haiku. I guess you’ll find another way to teach poetry than stations. Or maybe you’re just done?!

(Perhaps you’ll share some details? I am DYING to know what your 7th graders did with their stations! Though I can imagine some possibilities…)

Oh, about the craft. Each word is spot on and each line couldnt be stronger. Love the unconventional use of haiku!

  2. I’m one of those oddballs who loves teaching poetry. I’m planning stations for 8th graders in a few weeks. One group rarely comes to the library, so that will make it…interesting.

  3. I know that there is something to love about teaching poetry. I think that the problem was my timing. And also, that I need to do a better job establishing positive norms for group work. Which, since all these children are in middle school, and therefore super-mature, should be easy, right?
